Fundraiser to help develop water and sanitation green solutions for refugees and host communities.
Over the past few months, we have been assessing several informal settlements hosting Syrian refugees in the Bekaa Valley. One of the major problem facing refugees is access to sanitation facilities and clean water. The majority of households have dag up holes next to their tents and used it as pits for their temporary latrines. This temporary solution is causing major environmental health hazards and personal hygiene and health risks. The waste is spreading to and polluting shallow water tables. This polluted water is being used by refugees for washing; and in some cases for drinking.
Over the past 6 months, we have conducted several participatory assessments and researched several alternative options that can address this problem which is increasing morbidity and health risks among refugees, particularly infants, children and other vulnerable people of concerns. We have identified Ecosan Latrines – turning waste into fertilizers and income, and/or bio-gas plants – turning waste into energy for cooking, and increasing access to clean water as efficient and effective solutions that can address this problem in a green and sustainable way. This will extend the benefit to other refugees and host communities – increasing mutual interests, improving economic opportunities and reducing personal and environmental health risks.
This fundraiser will be used to fund operational costs of research and development to design the technical solutions and conduct the necessary field assessments and stakeholder consultation.
حفل جمع تبرعات للمساعدة في تطوير حلول بيئية لمشاكل الماء والصرف الصحي في مخيمات اللاجئين والمجتمعات المضيفة.
خلال الأشهر الماضية قمنا بتقييم وضع عدّة مخيّمات لاجئين غير رسميّة في سهل البقاع. أحد أخطر التحدّيات التي تواجه سكان هذه المخيّمات هي تأمين المياه النظيفة وتأمين نظام صرف صحي مناسب. معظم الأسر قامت باستحداث حفر قرب الخيام تُستخدم كمراحيض مؤقتة تخلق عددًا من المخاطر البيئية والصحيّة على مجموع سكان المخيمات. هذه المياه الممبتذلة تنتشر وتتسرب في الأرض ملوّثةً مياه الآبار السطحيّة التي يستخدمها الناس للتنظيف والاغتسال وفي بعض الأحيان للشرب.
خلال الأشهر الستة الماضية قمنا بتقييم الوضع وبإجراء بعض الأبحاث لتأمين خيارات بديلة تواجه الآثار الخطيرة على الصحة العامة خاصة لدى حديثي الولادة والأطفال والأفراد الأكثر عرضة للمرض. من الحلول الممكنة قمنا بتحديد مراحيض بيئية تستطيع تحويل الفضلات المبتذلة إلى سماد للنبات و/أو غاز صالح للاستخدام في الطبخ مثلًا، وتؤمّن مصادر المياه النظيفة من التلوّث بطريقة بيئية نظيفة ومستدامة، بالإضافة إلى تأمين مدخول اقتصادي يساعد الأسر اللاجئة والمجتمعات المضيفة على حدّ سواء ويخلق مصالح مشتركة بين المجموعتين.
التبرعات المجموعة ستستخدم لتمويل عمليّات الأبحاث الميدانية ولتطوير التقنيّات اللازمة لمواجهة هذه المشكلة على الأرض ولدى أصحاب المصلحة مباشرة.
