Jean-Marc Montera

Jean-Marc Montera is an essential French musician, clearly among the most active musicians in the field of improvisation since the 1970’s where he co-founded GRIM (Group of Musical Research and Improvisation) in 1978. He has more than thirty albums to his name. His first solo album, Hang Around Shouts, was released in 1995 with the label FMP (Free Music Production).
In 2011, he produces Les Anges du Péché with Lee Ranaldo and Thruston Moore, guitar players from Sonic Youth, then in 2012 the album 13 Impros with Fanny Paccoud & about thirteen artists from Marseille. In October 2013 he recorded What’s Up ? around poetry women from the Beat Generation, on the label Signatures (Radio France).

He has collaborated with many artists including Fred Frith, Barre Phillips, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Louis Sclavis, Michel Doneda, Ahmad Compaoré, Christine Wodrascka & Pauline Oliveros. He was also invited to two special concerts with Sonic Youth (La Villette-Paris 2007) and Patti Smith (Fondation Cartier - Paris 2009).

In 2001 he created l’Ensemble d’Improvisateurs Européens bringing together Hans Koch, Thomas Lehn, Hélène Breschand, Dan Vandewalle, Lelio Giannetto, Chris Cutler and Taavi Kerikmaé. This ensemble specialized in the interpretation of existing graphic scores (Cornelius Cardew, John Cage, Earl Brown…), and of those commissioned by young composers (Pierre-Yves Macé and Annette Schlünz).

CALAMITA

Sharif Sehnaoui: electric guitar
Tony Elieh: electric bass
Davide Zolli: drums

Calamita is the « rock » trio of Sharif Sehnaoui and Tony Elieh, two of the most active musicians on the Lebanese experimental scene that revolves around “Irtijal”, a yearly international festival that has been held in Beirut for nearly 20 years. While Sehnaoui comes from a jazz and improv music background, working with Mazen Kerbaj and Raed Yassin in the "A" Trio to develop a music they sometimes refer to as "textural swing", Elieh is primarily a rock musician, founding member of the Lebanese post-punk band The Scrambled Eggs whose work in the last decade has covered many directions from pop-rock to plain experimental.

Together they have developed several projects, including their unique Percussion Duo exclusively exploring percussion techniques on strings, improv trios with various drummers (Julian Sartorius, Roger Turner, Chris Corsano, Adam Golebiewski…), the seven piece band Karkhana, or Wormholes Electric, an audio-visual performance with Kerbaj drawing live.

In Calamita they are joined by Italian drummer Davide Zolli, best known for his years with Squadra Omega. They use this format to develop instrumental pieces that pay tribute to musical entities as diverse as Tony Conrad, Last Exit or Om Kolthoum.
