A documentary theatre performance on Sayyed Darwish by Ossama Helmy – Oz Oz
The performance begins with a rare photograph of Sayyed Darwish’s funeral in 1923, from the personal collection of the artist and collector Ossama Helmy–Oz Oz. Only five people attended the funeral. From this haunting image arises a question: how could the man who sang for the people be left so alone at his own farewell? Through archival materials, historical documents, and vintage recordings — by listening to Sayyed Darwish’s original gramophone discs and through moments of live singing — the performance searches for who Sayyed Darwish was, and the political, social, and economic context in which he lived. Between the lines of books and the crackle of records, an entire era of transformation unfolds — Egypt at the dawn of the twentieth century, where the artist’s story intertwines with that of the nation. In the final scene, the funeral is symbolically re-enacted a hundred years later. Each spectator becomes both witness and participant in a long-delayed farewell to a voice thatstill resonates in our collective memory.

ينطلق العرض من صورةٍ نادرة لجنازة سيد درويش عام 1923، من المجموعة الشخصية للفنان والمقتني أسامة حلمي- ؤزؤز، لم يحضر الجنازة سوى خمسة أشخاص. من هذه الصورة يبدأ التساؤل: كيف رحل من غنّى للناس ولم يحضر الناس وداعه؟ من خلال الأرشيفات والوثائق والتسجيلات القديمة، والإستماع
إلى الأسطوانات الأصلية لسيد درويش على جهاز الجرامفون والغناء الحي أيضا، يحاول العرض استكشاف من هو سيد درويش، وفي أي سياق عاش، سياسيًا واجتماعيًا واقتصاديًا. فبين سطور الكتب وأصوات الأسطوانات، يتكشف كامل من التحولات التي شهدتها مصر مطلع القرن العشرين، زمنٌ تتقاطع فيه سيرة الفنان مع سيرة الوطن.
وفي الختام، تُعاد الجنازة بعد مئة عام، حيث تُطبع صورالجنازة الأصلية على مرايا تُقدَّم للجمهور في نهاية العرض، فتنعكس وجوههم داخل الصورة، ليصبح كل متفرّج شاهدًا ومشاركًا في وداعٍ متأخر لفنانٍ لا يزال صوته حيًا في الذاكرة
