Description

Liliane Chlela’s “I, the hybrid and the antidote” premiering in Beirut on May 7 at Metro.

After two successful world premieres at Le Guess Who? and Ancienne Belgique in November ,2024, “I, the hybrid and the antidote” will be presented at Metro on May 7.
Featured in the best 20 shows at LGW?, the performance finds Liliane Chlela delving into sound design, electronic beatmaking, and artistic collaboration in an effort to forge her own path and advance a complex dialogue about the split expectations of having to either cater to a set sound with traditional arrangements or assimilate into generic electronic music genres. With “I, the hybrid and the antidote,” she opts to do neither. At its core, the project is aligned with Chlela’s signature intuitive composition style. Born out of spontaneous improvisational creation, the tracks bring to life an inner logic of vulnerable feelings and sonic musings. “I, the hybrid and the antidote” consists of a series of Phases in which Chlela works with instinctive rhythms and scales, analyzing and dissecting them using synths, field recordings, and her computer. But the project doesn’t stop at these recordings. To truly create the antidote to a bifurcated existence, Chlela will turn to a group of Beirut-based musicians and collaborators to bring the music to life. Farah Kaddour (buzuq), Paed Conca (clarinet), Inger Hannisdal (violin), and XXX will join Chlela for the live Beirut premiere. The artists will fill out the recorded segments of Chlela’s Phases with deeper shadings and arrangements, in a powerful amalgam that cuts across genre.
“I, the hybrid and the antidote” has been produced as part of Mophradat’s 2023/4 Consortium Commissions for music.

Artist bio
As an electronic producer, composer, performer, and DJ, Liliane Chlela is revered for the way she shatters and morphs the boundaries of genre. Born and raised in Beirut and currently based in Montréal, she came up as a key member of Lebanon’s thriving experimental and electronic scenes and has since gained international acclaim for her signature sound explorations. Since the early 2020s, Chlela has gained critical acclaim for a string of self-produced solo albums—including 2020’s Malign/Benign, 2021’s landmark Safala, and 2024’s Infinite
Machine-released Anatomy of a Jerk. Her solo work masterfully combines field recordings, deconstructed electronic beats, and a transparent inner dialogue with bold, cutting-edge sounds and a genre-defying approach. Her music is born out of a spontaneous, improvisational process, and she relies on sharp instincts and a deep sense of self-awareness to push her experiments to the next level and shape recordings into their final form. Fiercely independent, she aims to forge an unparalleled sonic persona, whether through her role as a composer and
producer or in her dynamic prowess as a DJ.
As Beirut’s DIY scene hit a creative peak in the early 2010s, she worked closely with other artists on a range of collaborations and projects. Armed with synths, samplers, pedals, and a guitar, she whipped up live takes on underground dance music in the improvisational trio The DnB Project, delved into heady and freeform post-rock with Hezbel Taleta, conjured glitchy ambient creations as part of the duo Infinite Moment of Composure, and melted hearts in the synthpop project The Butcher’s Bride. With her modular 2024 project, “I, the hybrid and the
antidote,” Chlela forged creative partnerships from Beirut to Cairo to Montréal and Utrecht with Nancy Mounir, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, and the Flare Quartet.
Chlela has brought her live performances to festivals across four continents—including MUTEK, Rewire, Roskilde, Le Guess Who?, and Eurosonic. As she continues to explore new sonic boundaries, she remains connected to her home country and nearby regional scenes. As co-founder of Beirut’s Jidariyya music collective, she promotes genre-bending creativity and advocates for equitable representation in the local music scene. Beyond her musical endeavors, Chlela’s boundless creativity extends to fashion films and campaigns, interactive installations, and performance art. This multi-sensory approach underscores her versatility and adventurous spirit, securing Chlela’s place as one of the region’s most multifaceted and pioneering artists.
