Dear friends and colleagues,
We invite you to join us for an evening marking fifteen years of Ettijahat – Independent Culture, on Thursday 22 October 2026 at Metro Al-Madina, Hamra, Beirut, from 6:00 pm to midnight.
Lebanon has been an essential part of Ettijahat’s story. Here, we have grown, worked alongside many of you and built partnerships that have helped sustain cultural and artistic work across Syria, Lebanon and the region. This anniversary brings us together to reflect on what we have learnt, how our practices have changed and the work we want to pursue in the years ahead.
The evening combines discussion, conversation, music and dance with artists and cultural practitioners from Syria and Lebanon. Our partner Rumman is curating the live music
programme.
Evening programme
A conversation about the arts as an exercise in possibility, and the conditions that make imagination possible in and between Lebanon and Syria: freedom, collective work and artistic practice itself. Drawing on experiences in theatre, cinema and cultural work, the discussion considers how production, expression and collaboration have changed over the past fifteen years, and what these experiences make possible today and in the future.
The discussion will be held in Arabic, with:
Helena Nassif: A Lebanese cultural researcher and practitioner who directed Culture Resource from 2017 to 2025.
Sasha Ayoub: A film editor and director of Stories Film Lab in Syria. .
Osama Ghanam: A Syrian theatre director, playwright and translator, and founder and artistic director of Damascus Theatre Lab. .
Ghassan Halwani: A Lebanese artist and filmmaker working across drawing, writing, cinema and animation. His practice engages with memory, missing persons, archives and collective cultural initiatives.
Moderated by Darine Abou Saad, Programme Officer at Ettijahat.
Reception and welcome
8:00 – 9:00
Following the discussion, a reception offers time to reconnect with friends and partners, continue conversations and exchange news about recent work. At 9:30 pm, the Ettijahat team will share a few words of welcome before the live music begins.
Music from Syria and Lebanon – curated by Rumman
9:00 – 12:00
Three live acts bring together different approaches to
Arabic rock and live electronic music:
Al Tase3
A Beirut-based Arabic rock band translating the music and stories its members grew up with into the language of rock. Their sound combines Levantine maqams and rhythms with electric instruments and oud, drawing on alternative, progressive and folk rock. Their self-titled debut album was released in March 2026.
ALSILK
Romy Melhem and Khaled Omran are a Beirut-based duo combining soulful vocals and their own Arabic lyrics with violin, electric bass and live electronics. Their sound moves between trip-hop, drum & bass, flamenco and Eastern rhythms, exploring a musical identity shaped by the political and social realities of Beirut and the wider region
Arb3a w Noss
A young Syrian band formed in early summer 2026. Its members bring different musical experiences to a shared passion for alternative Arabic rock. The band has performed in Damascus, Aleppo, Hama and Tartus and is working on its debut release, Lessa Tale3.
About Rumman
Founded in 2021 in El Mina, Tripoli, Rumman supports the independent music scene in North Lebanon and broadens access to it. It runs Stereo Kawalis, provides space for rehearsals, recording and performances, and develops local, regional and international collaborations, residencies and musical exchanges.
